A Janitor AI alternative for private roleplay

Short answer: if you want your characters and chats on your own machine, run them in SillyTavern and connect it to Obscurify.ai’s OpenAI-compatible API. Setup takes about two minutes. If you’d rather stay in a browser tab, the Obscurify.ai chat has a Roleplay category of models. Either way, the account is a random number with no email, and uncensored models are on the Pro plan.

Janitor AI is a very popular site for chatting with characters, but it’s a hosted service. Your characters, your chats and your account all live on someone else’s server. Users may want to move off of Janitor AI because they want more control over their story, better selection of models, or just don’t want all of their private RP to live on a server associated with their email address.

Obscurify.ai is not a character site. It doesn’t host a library of public characters. What Obscurify.ai provides you is what’s below the surface: 200+ models, a private account and an API for roleplay front-ends to consume.

Option 1: SillyTavern with the Obscurify.ai API

SillyTavern is a free front-end that you host yourself. Everything related to characters, lorebooks and chat history remains in your SillyTavern installation, and you can link it to any model provider of your choice. SillyTavern supports Obscurify.ai via its Custom (OpenAI compatible) connection type.

  1. In SillyTavern, open API Connections and select Chat Completion.
  2. Choose Custom (OpenAI-compatible) as the source.
  3. Enter https://obscurify.ai/v1 as the endpoint.
  4. Paste your Obscurify.ai API key (sk-obs1_...) and click Connect.
  5. Pick a model from the list and click Test Message.

Tested with SillyTavern 1.19.0: model list loaded, test messages succeeded, and streaming worked. Full guide includes tool calling, vision, and reasoning settings.

Option 2: roleplay models in the web chat

If you don’t want to install anything, open the chat and choose the Roleplay category in the model picker. It groups well-known character-roleplay fine-tunes. The ones in the catalogue right now:

Chat history will be stored in your browser, not on the Obscurify.ai servers.

Uncensored roleplay

Many roleplay fine-tunes are already permissive. For models with refusals deliberately reduced, the Pro plan ($45/month with $35 of usage included) adds uncensored models, in the chat and through the API. The Terms of Service still apply.

What it costs

There’s no subscription required for the API. Pay As You Go has no monthly fee: you pay per message from a prepaid balance, at each model’s listed price, so a long roleplay on a cheap model costs very little. New accounts get $1 of starter credit.

Pay with Monero, Bitcoin, Lightning or a card. Each payment is converted into blind vouchers so Obscurify.ai doesn’t know which payment belongs to which account.

Privacy

An account is a randomly generated 16-digit number, without email, phone number, username or password. Your identity is stripped out before your request gets to the model provider, as all they see is the text of your prompt, and not who you are. We don’t store prompts and responses on our servers, and text-based requests always take routes with zero data retention.

Common questions

Can I import my Janitor AI characters?

Obscurify.ai doesn’t host characters. SillyTavern can import character cards, so that’s the route if you want to bring characters with you.

Does SillyTavern work with Obscurify.ai?

Yes. Use Chat Completion with the Custom (OpenAI-compatible) source, and enter the endpoint https://obscurify.ai/v1. Tested on SillyTavern 1.19.0, including streaming.

Do I need a subscription?

No. Our API is available for all plans that have a positive balance, such as Pay As You Go (no monthly fee). For uncensored models you need Pro.

Do I need an email?

No. An account is a random account number.
