The Tools in Obscurify Chat
TL;DR: Models in Obscurify chat can run code on your device, search the web and look through a catalog of thousands of tools, all free and with no account. Running a tool from the catalog takes an account and is charged to your balance, with a limit on each reply. There is nothing to switch on: look for “Tools enabled” above the message box. See all the tools, free and pay per use.
What you get
The full list of tools shows what’s free and what each of the others costs.
| Tool | What it does | Cost | Who gets it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run code | Runs Python or JavaScript in a sandbox on your device | Free | Everyone |
| Show results | Displays charts, images and interactive pages in the chat | Free | Everyone |
| Web search | Finds current information and returns sources | Free | Everyone |
| Browse the catalog | Searches the catalog and reads each tool’s parameters and price | Free | Everyone |
| Run a catalog tool | Calls a tool from the catalog | Priced per tool | Accounts with a balance |
Run code
When running code beats guessing, the model writes it and runs it: math, data analysis, charts, simulations, file formats, or checking its own work. You see the code, its output and any charts in the reply.
Code runs in your browser or in the Android app, not on our servers. Python comes with the standard library, numpy, pandas, matplotlib, scipy, scikit-learn, statsmodels, sympy, networkx, lxml, pyyaml, regex and Pillow. JavaScript can load d3, date-fns, decimal.js, lodash, marked, mathjs, papaparse, yaml and zod. They are served from our own host at fixed versions, and nothing else can be installed. JavaScript is available too. A run can take up to 3 minutes.
The sandbox has no network access, so your code, data and results stay on your device. The only way out is through the tools below, and those calls do leave it.
Show results
Ask for a chart and it appears in the reply. Ask for a web page, game or calculator and the model can build it and show it as a live page in the chat. These pages are blocked from the network too.
Web search
The model can search the web when a question needs current information. Your query is sent from our server to a search provider, so the provider doesn’t get your IP address. It does get the words of the query, so avoid putting anything identifying in a question you want searched.
Pay-per-use tools
The catalog holds thousands of tools: search engines and Google Maps, Amazon, reviews, Reddit, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn and X data, company and people enrichment, email finding and verification, SEO and backlinks, finance, weather, scraping, and image, video and voice generation.
Anyone can have the model search the catalog and tell you what a job would cost. To run a tool, you need an account with a balance. The prices you see include our fee.
Search them all here. Each call is limited so a reply can’t run away with your balance:
- One reply can spend at most $1.00 on tools.
- One call can cost at most $0.25.
- A call is refused up front if your balance can’t cover its worst case.
Whatever a tool costs appears in the reply and in your account. Anything you send to one of these tools goes to the company that runs it, so the model is told not to send your private information unless your request needs it.
Guests
Guests get every free tool without an account. To keep that sustainable, guests can make up to 30 tool calls an hour, and free web search has a daily budget shared by all guests. When it runs out, it comes back the next day, and accounts aren’t affected.
When tools are off
The line above the message box shows what’s available for your current choice, and has a switch to turn tools on or off. With tools switched off, the model gets plain chat: no code, no web search and no catalog. The choice is saved on your device, and applies from your next message. Tools aren’t available when:
- You’ve picked a model that can’t call tools. Pick another one, or see which model to use.
- You’re in Local Mode, where the model runs on your device and nothing leaves it.
- JavaScript is off. The no-JavaScript chat is plain chat.
Staying safe
Web pages and tool results can contain text written to mislead a model. The model is told to treat everything that comes back as untrusted data and never to follow instructions found in it, but no model is perfect, so check anything important against its sources.
